A Thankful Thanksgiving

on Fri, 10/11/2013 - 09:09

Our warmest wishes to our friends and family at this special time of year.  ARCS has flourished and grown over the past 12 years thanks to the passion and perseverance of many volunteers and staff.  As we celebrate the fall harvest and our thoughts turn to those things for which we're thankful, I want to express my sincere thanks to you all.

The 2013-14 Season is off to a strong start!  What better indication of the health of ARCS is there than to witness the response to our fall registration?  Our choirs are blossoming and we're thrilled to have so many new and returning voices singing with us.  We're committed to our mission:  awakening, nurturing and sharing the magic of voices in harmony - and in those words lies the "secret sauce" of ARCS.

I look forward with excitement and anticipation to the months ahead as we pursue our mission, share our music and lift our voices.  Together with the board, artistic and admin teams, I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

All Ye Lads and Lasses...

on Sat, 09/07/2013 - 11:23

Ah, 'tis a pleasure to welcome you to ARCS and our 2013-14 season: British Invasion!  On our journey across the pond we'll be making stops in Scotland, Ireland, Wales and Britain...and we'll take some time to celebrate Christmas too!  A jolly good time is sure to be had by all.

Our repertoire is chosen and we can hardly wait to get started!  From the rousing "Wi' a Hundred Pipers" to the magical "Skyfall" from James Bond, ARCS choirs are on their marks to get our 12th season underway.  And as the summer comes to a close and our thoughts turn to leaf raking and snow tires (how very Canadian), we'll also be celebrating Christmas with another ecclectic and entertaining season of Up2Christmas.  Welcome back to all our returning singers and a harty "Good to have you with us" to all our new singers this year.

Registration remains ongoing through the month of September but space is filling up fast.  ARCS offers both auditioned and non-auditioned opportunities to sing and we encourage you to explore our website for full descriptions and details.  Those interested in more of a challenge in an ensemble setting please investigate "Something Different".  Those looking for a less intensive and non-performing singing experience, have a look at "Something Lite".  And, of course, our popular non-auditioned choirs Up2Something, Up2Christmas and She's Up2Something offer a unique and fun-filled opportunity to sing and perform.

So, start your engines and dust off the vocal chords...the ARCS 2013-14 Season is here!

British Invasion!

on Fri, 07/26/2013 - 15:07

As summertime settles in and we enjoy the longer, sunny days, the preparations for another season of singing are upon us!  On the heels of "Do You Hear the People Sing?", our 2013 season-end production, the Artistic Team at ARCS has set their collective mind to selecting more fun, ecclectic and enjoyable music to keep everyone singing through 2014.  Jolly good too -- because the 2013-14 season is just around the corner!

Perhaps we were inspired by the birth of Prince George (congrats to Prince William and Kate!), but maybe it was time we set our sights on music from another continent.  Then again, it could be simply because there is so much great music to explore from across the pond.  In any event, we're excited to celebrate the music of the British Isles (and the British Invasion) as we stiffen our upper lips and salute the music of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Britain.  And yes, that includes the Beatles!  It's a royal musical feast that you won't want to miss!

Now with five programs for adults of all ages and stages, ARCS welcomes new men and women to get in on the action.  Registration for our programs is now open and in most cases, there's no audition!  Whether you're a seasoned performer who's as comfortable on the stage as bangers are with mash, or you're brand new to the wonderful world of choral music -- we've got something for everyone.  Our non-performing program, Something Lite, is especially appropriate for snow birds, students, young parents and busy professionals who just want a casual singing experience amongst friends.

Do You Hear the People Sing?

on Sat, 05/04/2013 - 11:57

Do You Hear the People Sing?
The ARCS Family of Choirs was proud to present "Do You Hear the People Sing?" in three performances at the EPCOR CENTRE'S Martha Cohen Theatre on June 1st and 2nd, 2013.  150 voices converged for this spectacular season finale to ARCS' 11th year of awakening, nurturing and sharing the magic of voices in harmony!

From our earliest recollections, we all have a "musical scrapbook" filled with songs we've sung - in school, on a roadtrip, in church or at a hockey game.  "Do You Hear the People Sing?" explored the repertoire that we all share and sing when we get together...the music of the people!

Since 2002, ARCS has been delighting audiences with their unique brand of choral music.  Now with five programs dedicated to the adult singer, ARCS moves proudly into its second decade with this season finale featuring performances by three of its family members:  Up2Something, She's Up2Something and Something Different.  Costumes, staging and choreography are standard ingredients in every ARCS production and will complement the wide variety of repertoire shared.  We've been bringing audiences to their feet since we began - and we the tradition continued with our most recent production!

Our special thanks and most heartfelt congratulations to the many, many singers, volunteers, audience members and family and friends who made "Do You Hear the People Sing?" such a great success.  Bravo!

Let Music Live!

on Sun, 04/21/2013 - 11:28

What a night!  The ARCS Family of Choirs hosted an evening that will not soon be forgotten on Saturday, April 20th at Knox United Church.  She's Up2Something and Up2Something played host to seven guest choirs -- from barbershop to yodlers -- all sewn together by the remarkably gifted Heebee-jeebees who served as emcees and entertainers extraordinaire.

A sold-out house was treated to an onslaught of talent that was filled with amazing music, incredible variety and exceptional quality.  Our thanks to our guest choirs -- the Westwinds Choral Ensemble, Calgary Men's Chorus, Bow Valley Chorus, Big Rock Singers, Yodler Club Heimattreu, Second Chants, and the Stampede City Chorus -- for joining us in the 5th edition of the Biennial Calgary Sings! event.  Our fine city enjoys a wealth of opportunity for adults to sing in harmony!

The culmination of the evening was a spine-tingling performance by the Mass Choir of 375 voices of Joseph Martin's "The Awakening".  For anyone who was there - singing this remarkable piece, or listening in the audience -- this was breathtaking.  The proclamation "Let Music Live!" was a fitting conclusion to an evening that will live on in our memories for a very long time.

A portion of proceeds from the 2013 Calgary Sings! event will be donated to the Calgary Health Trust in support of the Music Therapy Program at Carewest facilities.  To all who made Calgary Sings! possible, our deepest thanks and appreciation for making music with us, for allowing us the opportunity to sing, and to supporting us in our passion.

Until 2015!

Something Awesome!

on Sun, 02/24/2013 - 13:26

The ARCS Annual Talent Show and Silent Auction is fast-approaching...and with a record number of entries this year, it's going to be a humdinger!  Saturday, March 2nd at the Gateway at SAIT Polytechnic is the place to be at 7:30pm.  Members of ARCS' choirs let their hair down, take the spotlight and let it rip!  There's a vast array of talent and tunes in a tour de force of 28 unique and entertaining acts.

The Annual Talent Show came about many years ago as a means to enable ARCS members to express and explore their individual musical gifts.  Taking the stage as a soloist or part a duet or ensemble is no easy feat.  It takes courage, hard work and dedication to stand up in front of an audience and deliver a song.  That's why it's so remarkable and rewarding that in 2013, the Talent Show is still one of the highlights of ARCS' season!

In addition to everything taking place onstage, there will be some incredible items under the spotlight, and under the auction hammer, in the Silent Auction.  One-of-a-kind items and experiences will go to the highest bidder, so please bring your credit card!  All proceeds support the ongoing operations of ARCS.

So what are you waiting for?  The stage is set for an unforgettable evening!  Tickets are now on sale - see the sidebar for how to get yours!

Welcome 2013!

Sing in 2013!
A very Happy New Year to you and yours from the ARCS Family of Choirs!  As we say hello to a fresh new year, it's a good time to look ahead to all the great things in store.  One thing is for sure -- ARCS will be singing our way through 2013 and we hope you'll join us!

ARCS is currently registering new singers for the following programs:

  • Something Lite:  Non-auditioned, non-performing mixed chorus
  • She's Up2Something:  Non-auditioned, performing women's chorus
  • Something Different:  Auditioned, performing mixed ensemble (please contact us if you'd like to schedule an audition interview)

Rehearsals for all programs reconvene the week of January 7th.  New singers are welcome to join in and try us out before making a commitment.  Complete information is available by looking under "How2Join".

ARCS is excited about its upcoming performances and events!  We proudly present the ARCS Talent Show & Silent Auction on March 2nd; Calgary Sings! 2013 on April 20, and our year-end production "Do You Hear the People Sing!" on June 1 and 2nd.  Please see Up&Coming for details.

Thank you for making 2012 such a rewarding year for ARCS.  We are grateful to our singers, volunteers, staff and supporters who have helped us in our mission to "awaken, nurture and share the magic of voices in harmony!"

Merry Christmas from ARCS!

on Sun, 12/16/2012 - 12:19

The ARCS Family of Choirs extends to you and yours our best wishes for the holiday season!  On Sunday, December 9th, 150 voices -- members of Up2Christmas, Up2Something and Something Different -- joined together to present "Something Christmas" at River Park Church.  We were thrilled to perform for two sold-out audiences and appreciated their enthusiastic reception.  Thank you for all the positive feedback!  What a magical time is the Christmas season and we were so honored to share it with you!

I'm writing from a clifftop near Paia in Maui, Hawaii.  Having arrived here just a couple of days ago, I'm finding it odd to adjust to lush green hillsides, sunshine and crashing waves when just a week ago I was dashing through the snow en route to our Christmas performances.  How wonderful is a world in which we have the freedom to board a plane and within hours, be in a different time zone, climate and scenery.  On the way to our accommodation, we passed a Christmas display of Santa and his reindeer, in front of which a man was mowing his lawn.  Strange to say the least for a born and bred Canadian!

As 2012 comes to a close, I'm reminded of the many things for which I'm grateful.  Among these is the opportunity to make music with men and women who share my passion for the art.  Most of us never have the opportunity to stand on a stage and sing "O Holy Night" in complex harmony with a cohort of more than 100 people.  What a great gift!
