Merry Christmas from ARCS!

on Sun, 12/16/2012 - 12:19

The ARCS Family of Choirs extends to you and yours our best wishes for the holiday season!  On Sunday, December 9th, 150 voices -- members of Up2Christmas, Up2Something and Something Different -- joined together to present "Something Christmas" at River Park Church.  We were thrilled to perform for two sold-out audiences and appreciated their enthusiastic reception.  Thank you for all the positive feedback!  What a magical time is the Christmas season and we were so honored to share it with you!

I'm writing from a clifftop near Paia in Maui, Hawaii.  Having arrived here just a couple of days ago, I'm finding it odd to adjust to lush green hillsides, sunshine and crashing waves when just a week ago I was dashing through the snow en route to our Christmas performances.  How wonderful is a world in which we have the freedom to board a plane and within hours, be in a different time zone, climate and scenery.  On the way to our accommodation, we passed a Christmas display of Santa and his reindeer, in front of which a man was mowing his lawn.  Strange to say the least for a born and bred Canadian!

As 2012 comes to a close, I'm reminded of the many things for which I'm grateful.  Among these is the opportunity to make music with men and women who share my passion for the art.  Most of us never have the opportunity to stand on a stage and sing "O Holy Night" in complex harmony with a cohort of more than 100 people.  What a great gift!

Something Christmas SOLD OUT!

on Tue, 12/04/2012 - 17:09

ARCS is delighted to present a celebration of the season with "Something Christmas" on Sunday, December 9th at River Park Church.  BOTH PERFORMANCES ARE NOW SOLD OUT!  Two performances at 3:30pm and 7:30pm will take place with opportunities for the audience to join us for Christmas carolling throughout.  Up2Christmas, Up2Something and Something Different will each present selections from their repertoire followed by a spine-tingling rendition of O Holy Night!  Steve Olson will emcee and a portion of ticket proceeds will support Music Therapy programs at Carewest Continuing Care Centres.  The performances are approximately 75 minutes without an intermission.

Something Christmas has experienced unprecented popularity this year with the matinee performance already sold out.  A few remaining tickets are currently available for the evening performance and can be purchased online at Eventbrite.  Festival seating is in effect with doors opening 30 minutes before each of the performances.  The evening performance will be followed by a reception.

Something Christmas has become an annual tradition for the ARCS family of choirs.  Each year, we look forward to sharing our enjoyment and love of singing with our audiences!  We are thrilled that our choirs have become widely popular and honored that so many have chosen to include Something Christmas in their Christmas traditions.

We look forward to performing for you and singing with you this Sunday!

Up & Running!

on Fri, 10/05/2012 - 18:13

Welcome to ARCS!  We're thrilled with the response to our programs this season and overwhelmed by the popularity we enjoy.  We've begun rehearsals in all programs now, including Up2Something, Up2Christmas, Something Lite and Something Different!  We're firing on all cylinders and it looks like everyone is having the time of their lives.  There's still time to join if you haven't already -- please check out our "How2Join" tab for more information.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving, it's a time to reflect on the many things we have for which to be thankful.  As artistic director of ARCS, it's such an energizing experience to walk into a rehearsal room charged with energy, excitement and anticipation.  I'm thankful for many things -- including the opportunity to bring music into so many people's lives.  From our early beginnings, our commitment has been to provide adults with opportunities to express their love of music and to see so many taking advantage is truly heart warming.

Our theme for 2012-13 is "Do You Hear the People Sing?" - and even after just a week or two of rehearsals, the magic of voices in harmony is filling the air.  Music throughout history has played an important role in our human journey...leading us into battle, celebrating victory, organizing work, mourning our losses, expressing joy, worship of a higher power, and telling the stories of our lives.  Our repertoire this season moves through many genres - gospel, broadway, pop, spirituals, folk and more -- all intended to evoke memories, a response, and participation.

Come and Join Us!

on Mon, 07/02/2012 - 10:30

"I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this group this year, and will happily join again! Last year i was member in the audience, and when i saw the organization perform, i knew that i wanted to be a part of this. I felt very welcomed by all members and staff. And i really enjoyed all the choreography! I like being active and entertaining, and this group was just the right fit for me!"  -- First Year Singer

"I enjoy the singing, and putting the show together with everyone. It is really something to be proud of when we finish in June and look back at everything we have accomplished. I love the music, singing and performing and that is the main reason I joined the choir." -- Returning Singer

ARCS invites you to join us for our 2012-13 season!

If you've arrived at our page through a Google search or a referral from someone who's in one of our programs, welcome!  There's a lot of information here that we hope will help you decide if ARCS is right for you.  Most importantly, we want you to feel welcome and invite you to check us out when we resume rehearsals in the fall.  We've got a decade of making music, magic and memories under our belt and we'd love to have you with us as we embark on our second decade!

Joining a choir can be a bit intimidating if you haven't sung before, or if it's been a long time since you've sung with others.  As adults, the opportunities to sing and perform are often limited to the car, the shower and in church.  ARCS believes that learning and performing music can be one of the most uplifting, positive and healthy activities for men and women.

ARCS 10th Anniversary Show - Joy Ride! - Brings Audiences to Their Feet

on Wed, 06/06/2012 - 08:16

The choirs of ARCS joined forces in a musical tour de force this past weekend to present Joy Ride! - a celebration of our 10th Anniversary.  More than 130 singers took the stage in three performances at the EPCOR CENTRE's Martha Cohen Theatre.  The fast-paced and highly entertaining show traveled through our previous nine seasons - from New York! New York! to "Hooray for Hollywood!" - and captured the audience's attention with behind-the-scenes video interviews with some of our members.  The evening culminated in a stirring rendition of "For Good" and a rousing mass choir performance of "Celebration".  The audience was brought to its feet at the conclusion of each of the three shows - lauding performers with their enthusiastic appreciation.

The ARCS' journey has been a thrilling ride!  Our 10th Anniversary Season has brought back our cherished alumni and witnessed the formation of our 4th non-auditioned program - Something Lite.  Together, more than 150 singers participated in our programs this season, and we've enjoyed great success with our public performances.  On behalf of all of us, we thank our loyal supporters, congratulate our 10 year members, and extend a warm invitation to new singers to join us for the 2012-13 season.  We have been changed "For Good" because of the tremendous contributions of hundreds of people over the years and we value each and every one.

To the members of Up2Something, She's Up2Something and Something Different - BRAVO!  You have shown what remarkable things can be accomplished through hard work and dedication.

ARCS members, friends and supporters gathered on Saturday, March 3rd for the 10th Anniversary ARCS Talent Show and Silent Auction at the Gateway at SAIT.  What a remarkable display of talent was served up by some 50 performers in 20 acts recalling themes from ARCS' previous nine seasons.  An incredibly enthusiastic audience showed their appreciation with thunderous applause for each act and the evening was expertly emceed by current and past Presidents of ARCS.  Solos, duets, trios and ensemble performances made for a widely diverse and highly entertaining evening enjoyed by more than 200 attendees.

The ARCS Artistic Team extends to each and every performer our hartiest and heartfelt congratulations for your bravery, outstanding talent and hard work!  Yes, talent is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration!  The effort and time invested in each act was evident and made for the best Talent Show in ARCS' history.  What a pleasure to witness those who took the stage for the very first time, and to see so many returning performers who continue to raise the bar.

The Talent Show and Silent Auction require an immense outpouring of time and energy on the part of many.  A very special thank you to all those behind the scenes who helped make the event a success.  Those who helped with the set up, backstage, Silent Auction, box office, rehearsals, folding programs and decorating deserve our deepest appreciation.  Thank you!
