Up2Christmas, Up2Something and Something Different proudly presented two performances of "Something Christmas" on Sunday, December 11th to near-capacity crowds...and the reviews are in:  "That was really something!"

Congratulations to all the performers who created magic with an entertaining and exceptional presentation of holiday music.  The combined choirs stunning performance of "O Holy Night" brought the audience to its feet (and to tears) in both performances.  Thank you for sharing your gifts and for helping bring the spirit of Christmas to our community!

We are so thankful for the opportunity to share our love of music.  It is made even more special by creating beautiful sound with friends.  Michelle, Lorne, Ingrid, Katherine and I are grateful to have the privilege of working with you.

Our thanks to the performers, Steve Olson (our esteemed Emcee), volunteers and all who attended for making "Something Christmas" a great success.  We are proud to support Music Therapy programs at Carewest through a portion of proceeds made on behalf of ARCS to the Calgary Health Trust.

On behalf of ARCS, we wish you and yours all the joys of the season - may it be filled with love, kindness and especially music!

Up2Something Rocks the Rockies

on Sun, 11/20/2011 - 22:00

What a weekend!  60 members of Up2Something converged at the Bill Warren Centre in Canmore this weekend for their annual retreat.  With spectacular views of the majestic Rockies, Up2Something cozied up for some intensive and inspiring teaching from master choral conductor Malcolm Edwards.  The choir was put through its paces as Malcolm led us through a wide range of repertoire with a focus on Christmas repertoire in preparation for "Something Christmas" on December 11th.  Much was accomplished in four workshops spread over three days, leaving us all exhausted and exhilirated!

On Saturday evening, the "Anything Goes Gala" brought out the best (and worst) costumes from our previous nine seasons.  Attendees were seated at themed tables and required to prepare and perform a short song from one of our previous shows, complete with choreography, harmony and theatrics.  The results were histarical and incredibly creative!  The Holiday Inn Canmore served up a first-class buffet and we ate, drank and were merry.  Those with the greatest stamina danced the night away until the wee hours of the morning.

Special thanks to all the volunteers under the direction of Lorie Thomas, Retreat Coordinator, and Sue Yaskiw, Program Coordinator; to Harold at the Bill Warren Centre and his staff; to Malcolm Edwards for his expert instruction; to the staff of the Holiday  Inn Canmore for their hospitality; and to the choir members for making the weekend both incredibly productive and fun!

Something Lite Anyone?

on Thu, 09/29/2011 - 22:45

At long last, the newest addition to the ARCS family of choirs begins next Wednesday at St. David's United Church.  In response to our members and alumni, we've created a new program for men and women we think you might be interested in.  Rehearsing from October to April, Something Lite offers a recreational choir that's all about singing just for the fun of it.  No workshops, no costumes and no (well, hardly any) performances!

If you're a snowbird that spends weeks in Arizona in the winter, if you have a young family and can't commit to a heavy rehearsal schedule, or simply just want to escape the demands of your stressful career by singing -- Something Lite is the choir for you.

We've assembled a first-class artistic team to lead this new endeavor too!  Brent Tucker will be directing and Eric Nyland will be accompanying the choir.  Repertoire will explore an ecclectic range of music for SAB voicing.  Rehearsals will take place on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 - 9:00pm at St. David's United Church (3303 Capitol Hill Cres. NW)Something Lite will meet from October 5th through April 25th and is currently accepting registrations.  You're also welcome to sit in on a couple of rehearsals before you make a commitment.

All ARCS programs are still accepting new singers for the 10th Anniversary Season.  Get in on the action and join us today!

Pack Your Bags...

on Sat, 08/27/2011 - 10:24

ARCS heads into its 10th Anniversary Season beginning this fall and new and returning singers will enjoy the adventure that is in store!

We're pleased to announce our 2011-12 Season Theme: "Joy Ride!"  What better way to celebrate a decade of sharing our love of music than to take a trip back in time, revisiting friends and our favorite music, while opening our eyes and ears to new experiences!  The season gets started right after Labor Day -- and we can't wait to welcome new and returning singers to all four of ARCS' programs.

ARCS offers several options for the new and experienced singer, all in a non-auditioned, recreational choir setting.  You'll find our choirs to be filled with friendly, enthusiastic people who share a love of music.  Registration is now open to all interested singers by visiting the "How to Join" link.

We're thrilled to be launching our 4th program this year: Something Lite is the newest addition to the ARCS family of choirs and offers men and women a non-performing recreational choir with a shortened season, running from mid-October to April.  Something Lite is perfect for those who just want to sing, but are unable to make the commitment required of our performing choirs.

Up2Something welcomes men and women to join us this fall as we embark on our 10th season.  The program includes a fall retreat in Canmore, performances in December and June, a Talent Show in March and a 10th Anniversary Celebration Event planned for April.  An exciting season is planned and we hope that you'll join us!
